Picture The Past

Picture The Past was a concept designed to raise awareness of Sydney’s lost architectural heritage.

Many people do not know that Sydney was once home to a collection of grand buildings that dominated its skyline and defined its streets.

Some of the buildings that no longer stand include:

• The Anthony Hordern & Sons Building – demolished in 1986 to make way for the now “World Square”.
• The Exhibition Building in Prince Alfred Park – demolished in 1954 to make way for an Olympic swimming pool.
• The Garden Palace – an exhibition building which was situated in the Royal Botanic Gardens and constructed to house the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879. It was lost to a fire in 1882.
• The Farmers and Graziers Building, Circular Quay – demolished in 1959 for the AMP building at Circular Quay.
• The Henry Bull & Co. Building – demolished in 1973 to make way for the St. Martins Tower.

These buildings once defined Sydney. This campaign was to remember and celebrate the buildings which no longer stand. By placing posters in strategic locations and harnessing augmented reality, we hoped to create awareness in the public that our decisions today will shape the future Sydney – its streets and its urban life.
